Before the Spotlight: The Journey of Song Kang
Long before he earned the title “Son of Netflix” and captured global hearts in hit K-dramas like Sweet Home, Nevertheless, and My Demon, Song Kang was just a quiet kid in Suwon, South Korea, figuring out his path.
An Artistic Upbringing and Early Dreams
Born on April 23, 1994, Song grew up in an environment surrounded by physical activity and the arts. With a father who was an artistic gymnast and a mother who worked as a piano teacher, creativity and discipline were part of his daily life.
However, acting wasn’t his very first ambition. As a teenager, Song was fascinated by architecture and furniture design after seeing striking photos of modern spaces. He eventually stepped away from that dream, humorously admitting later that he simply had no idea where to begin with the rigorous math and training required.
The turning point came when he watched Leonardo DiCaprio’s iconic performance in Titanic. Inspired by the emotional depth on screen, Song set a new life goal: he wanted to evoke those same powerful feelings in an audience as an actor.
Turning Down K-Pop Scouting
Standing at 1.86 meters (6’1″) with striking visuals, it didn’t take long for the entertainment industry to notice him. Before making his official acting debut, Song received multiple casting offers to train as a K-pop idol.
Instead of taking the musical route, he chose to stay fully focused on his craft. He enrolled in the Department of Film Arts at Konkuk University, throwing himself into studying dramatic theory, stage performance, and film history to build a solid foundation for a long-term acting career.
Stepping Into the Industry
Song officially broke into the entertainment world in 2017, landing a supporting role as Baek Jin-woo in the tvN romantic-comedy series The Liar and His Lover. Though small, the role opened doors. He quickly followed it up with appearances in the drama Man in the Kitchen, music video cameos, and stints as a variety show regular and music program host (such as co-hosting Inkigayo in 2018).
